What is Rosacea?

If you’ve chosen to take a read of this blog post, you probably suffer, or know someone who suffers from Rosacea of some kind, so let’s start with the basics. Rosacea is a skin condition that causes facial flushing, redness and sensitivity across the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. It can also cause redness and irritation on the scalp, eyes, ear and neck. People with fair skin and those that blush easily are most likely to experience Rosacea.

It’s often caused by something called Histamines. These are a chemical found in our body and when they are released into our bloodstream, they cause itching and flushing.

What triggers Rosacea?

Foods like bananas, dairy-based products, caffeine, spicy foods and alcohol can often be triggers.

Stress (staying up pasture bedtime . . .).

Extreme weather temperatures or sudden changes of temperature (like going from the cold air-conditioned office to outside in the heat of summer) or if it's very windy outside.

Skin care – skin often becomes hypersensitive when Rosacea flares up. Make sure the products you use are suitable for sensitive skin (we've herd MooGoo is good..).

Some medications (particularly the use of antibiotics long-term).

There have been some studies that indicate Rosacea can also be caused by an imbalance in the gut flora, which is often caused by antibiotic use or diet. We would certainly recommend you do your own research as well to narrow down what is triggering yours.

How can MooGoo help?

While all of our products are made for people with sensitive skin and skin problems, we’ve selected a few that we think would be best for those with Rosacea. You can check out our recommendations here

Our Milk Wash is made using a combination of gentle, natural, low-irritant cleansers that will provide a thorough cleanse, and is ideal for Rosacea as it has the same irritation score as water.

We have always recommended our Soothing MSM Moisturiser to help soothe Rosacea. This is because it’s made with nourishing skin repair ingredients, as well as MSM (organic Sulphur), which is well-known for its skin calming properties. A good moisturiser will help to restore the skin's barrier and guard against flare-ups caused by to your surrounding environment.

Tip: Smart cows keep their creams in the fridge – Cool cream feels even better on red skin!

We’ve also had great feedback from customers using our Rosehip Oil because it has high levels of Alpha Linoleic Acid, an essential fatty acids that troubled skin loves and need. This oil is very hydrating for the skin and will soothe and improve skin tone and texture.

Can I still wear makeup?

We get this question a lot. The best way to cover up redness without causing further damage is to use natural mineral makeup. Our MooGoo Makeup range is a natural range of vegan-friendly, mineral makeup designed for people of all ages and skin types. We created this to be a healthy alternative to traditional cosmetics. It’s non-irritating and doesn’t use any artificial colours, fragrances or preservatives. Some of the minerals also improve the health of the skin.
